Problem Addressed
Throughout the year, Banff encounters a wide range of pedestrian and road traffic.
With an influx of tourists during summer months, there was a need to better manage streetlights in highly trafficked areas. They wanted to keep the flow of daytime traffic to accommodate both pedestrians and vehicles, and also restrict evening and weekend vehicle traffic to create a walking-friendly street for pedestrians. In another effort to keep the streets safe for visitors and residents, the city wanted more control over the area’s exterior lighting.
With smart city infrastructure growing in popularity, the Town of Banff was looking for ways to slowly implement new smart city technologies. With a focus on growth capacity, they wanted to work with a solution that could integrate with future technologies.
Solutions Used
To address growing traffic needs, the Town of Banff adopted a smart lighting control system, CityConnect from MeshSmart.
CityConnect helps them manage their current streetlights while offering a strong power management solution. This future-proof technology also allows the Town to add additional IoT devices under the current network application, helping Banff keep up with smart city trends.
The sensors auto-adjust based on Banff’s time zone, automatically accommodating for dark winters and bright summers. Town officials also have the ability to schedule different types of lighting requirements (dim, on/off, adjustable levels of luminaire) for any given occasion, season or holiday. The system offers true utility grade power management reporting through the CityConnect platform – a comprehensive dashboard showing collected data, streetlight settings and defective alerts. This allows proactive maintenance and scheduling, while saving costs on truck rollouts and time for maintenance crews.
Outcomes
1
Town officials have control over luminaire intensity to accommodate for heavy tourist seasons and times, e.g. ability to adjust from 80% on weekdays to 100% on weekends.
2
Dashboard analytics provide preemptive maintenance on street poles, resulting in lower operation and maintenance costs and less reliance on residents to inform the Town of any outages.
3
Future IoT integrations, including street cameras, free public WiFi and digital signage can be viewed remotely and managed on one platform.
Who Should Consider
Cities looking to increase their smart city capabilities and implement more integrated IoT projects in the future.
