Manual inventory data entry left Independence's electrical utility without real-time visibility.

As the fifth largest city in the state of Missouri, Independence has a lot of power to manage. The city's electrical utility, Independence Power and Light (IPL) manages inventory in multiple warehouses. They have relied on manual entry data for all inventory updates.

This left them without real-time visibility of inventory stock levels or location. Additional manual work included barcoding all inventory from light bulbs to transformers, taking up an excessive amount of staff time. Their current processes didn't connect to their asset and work management system, resulting in decentralized data.

Ultimately, if IPL was going to keep up with increased energy demand, they needed to implement a more efficient, streamlined inventory system.

Solutions Used

Independence automated its warehouse management with a real-time label configuration solution.

To switch to an automated inventory system, IPL decided to work with Radley to implement a real-time solution that facilitated extensive data collection and connect with their existing asset and work management system, Cityworks. The solution enabled IPL to perform Cityworks transactions instantly from mobile devices, allowing staff to complete transactions from anywhere.

IPL uses Zebra brand mobile devices which support their two factor authentication system for multiple layers of security, which enabled Radley’s software was to run within IPL’s security layers. To streamline implementation, Cityworks Storeroom and Radley solutions were implemented simultaneously.

For warehouse inventory, transactions are instantly performed through Radley's interface on mobile user devices and inquiries come from the IPL Generation warehouse for part details and on hand quantities. Now when staff receives new stock, they can receive it directly from the dock instead of going through manual processes.



IPL now has full, real-time visibility on warehouse inventory giving them more reliable data to act on


Overall system improvements of barcode tracking and data collection has increased operational efficiency


The current system allows for future enhancements, including inventory counts and audits as well as moves and transfers of inventory from one location to another


With less manual data entry, there are less errors increasing overall data integrity

IPL plans to convert other warehouses to this solution, including transmission and distribution, fiber and communications, and substations.
