Stormwater Drainage Assessment Tool

Bonita Springs , FL , United States
At a Glance: Strategic deployment of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to reduce flooding.
The challenges this project addresses are: Flooding, Coastal & Tidal Flooding, Stormwater Management
Constraints to improving the stormwater system include limited city-owned land, and competing objectives for improving city recreation and economic growth. Stormwater best management practices (BMPs) - detention ponds, rain gardens, and swales - slow and treat stormwater as it moves through the system to reduce flood risk during storms and improve water quality. Choosing where, specifically, to deploy BMPs to maximize impact can be challenging, though.
Bonita Springs used Atkins' stormwater BMP Assessment Tool (BAT) to address this/these challenge(s).
Atkins worked with Bonita Springs to help the city decide where BMPs should be placed for the best results by developing the BMP Assessment Tool (BAT). The tool allows the city to simulate various scenarios for placing BMPs throughout the stormwater drainage system. Using a rainfall/runoff algorithm, the tool estimates pollutant loads across the network for each scenario, supporting informed decision-making on which BMPs to implement and where to place them. Who should consider? Communities struggling with flooding who are interested in BMPs or nature-based approaches.
